In August 2026, the government has got a big relief on the GST collection front. The country's gross GST collection increased by 14.8 percent on an annual basis to reach ₹ 1,99,853 crore, which is about ₹ 2 lakh crore.

GST Collection August 2026: India's gross GST collection in August 2026 increased by 14.8% year-on-year to ₹1,99,853 crore. GST from imports and increase in domestic business strengthened the tax collection. However, the total collection in August was less as compared to July. Strong figures have emerged for the Government of India on the Goods and Services Tax i.e. GST Collection front in August 2026.

According to preliminary data released on Tuesday, the country's gross GST revenue in August stood at ₹1,99,853 crore. This is 14.8 percent more than ₹1,74,116 crore in August last year. In this way the monthly GST collection once again reached the level of around ₹ 2 lakh crore. However, if seen on month-on-month basis, GST collection in August was less than July. Gross GST revenue in July 2026 was recorded at around ₹2.11 lakh crore.

Despite this, the strong growth on an annual basis is being considered a sign of better business activities and tax compliance in the Indian economy.

29% increase in GST received from imports

The most important thing in the GST data of August was the sharp increase in import GST. Gross GST revenue from imports increased by about 29 per cent year-on-year to ₹62,604 crore. In August 2025, this amount was ₹48,546 crore. This increase in import-based GST coupled with domestic tax collections helped strengthen overall revenues.

At the same time, gross GST received from domestic transactions also increased. Domestic GST revenue increased by about 9.3 per cent to ₹1,37,249 crore in August, compared to ₹1,25,570 crore in the same month last year.

Government earnings also increased from CGST and SGST

The Center and states also received huge amounts from different GST heads during August 2026. As per available data, CGST generated revenue of ₹38,413 crore, while SGST generated ₹46,316 crore. Apart from this, ₹52,520 crore was earned from IGST. The sharp increase in revenue from import taxes significantly contributed to taking the total GST collection to around ₹2 lakh crore.

India's total gross GST collection between April to August 2026 has reached ₹10,42,757 crore. This is about 11 percent more than the same period last year. Continued strong tax collection is being considered a positive sign for the government's revenue base.

Government increased GST refund

While gross GST collection increased in August, there was also a significant increase in refunds issued by the government. A total of ₹31,795 crore GST refunds were issued during the month. In August last year, this amount was ₹18,935 crore. That means there was an increase of about 67.9 percent in refunds on an annual basis.

Domestic refunds increased by 72.6 per cent to ₹18,490 crore. At the same time, export refunds issued through ICEGATE increased by about 61.8 percent and reached ₹13,305 crore. After adjusting refunds, the government's net GST collection in August 2026 stood at ₹1,68,057 crore. In August last year, this figure was ₹1,55,181 crore. On this basis, an increase of about 8.3 percent was recorded in net GST revenue.
