In Agra, Uttar Pradesh, workers of the upper caste community and Karni Sena protesting against the new rules of UGC clashed with the police. Around 300 protesters were marching towards the SDM office but the police stopped them on the way. After this, an altercation started between the two parties and within no time the matter escalated into a scuffle.

After this the police started lathi charge on the protesters. It is alleged that an inspector himself started lathicharge on the protesters. The ACP present at the spot tried to stop him but he did not stop. After the incident, anger among the protesters increased and the situation became tense.

What is the whole matter?

The protesters were marching towards the SDM office in protest against the new rules of UGC. The police stopped them from moving forward. An argument started between the protesters and policemen regarding this matter. Within some time, a scuffle started between the two sides. During the clash an inspector fell on the road. After this there was lathi charge by the police. Seeing the situation worsening, additional police forces were also called from nearby police stations.

According to eyewitnesses, an inspector lost his temper during the clash. He single-handedly started lathicharge on the protesters. The ACP present at the spot tried to stop them but it is alleged that the Inspector did not listen to him and continued the lathi charge in front of him also. When the situation worsened, the inspector himself went to the lawyers' chambers for safety. After this the policemen closed the gate of the chamber.

Protestors staged a protest on the highway

Angered by the police action, the protesters later started a dharna on the Agra-Kanpur National Highway. The protesters sat on the road and recited Hanuman Chalisa. Due to this, long queues of vehicles formed on the highway and traffic was affected. Police officials appealed to the protesters to vacate the road but said that their protest would continue until the inspector who resorted to lathicharge was removed. Seeing the seriousness of the matter, senior police officers reached the spot and talked to the protesters. After persuasion by the officials, the protesters were pacified and the situation was controlled.
