Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay C Joseph has announced that all the cases registered from 2021 to April 2026 against the peacefully protesting farmers and teachers will be withdrawn. Chief Minister Vijay has said that there is a need to withdraw the cases registered against those who were peacefully presenting their demands to the government for their livelihood and officials.
The Tamil Nadu government has said that this decision is being taken on humanitarian grounds. The government is with the farmers and teachers, there will be dialogue with them, their demands will be met. The government has said that peaceful protest is the right of the citizens, with which no compromise should be made.
What is the matter?
A case was registered under the Goonda Act against the farmers protesting against the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu (SIPCOT) in Tiruvannamalai district. Farmers protested against the new airport project in Parandur, a case was also registered against them. Farmers say that their land is being taken away, water ponds are being destroyed, due to which their livelihood is being affected.
On what basis is the government withdrawing the case?
The Tamil Nadu government has said that the previous government had suppressed these rebellions in an inhumane manner. Cases against them are still pending. These cases will be removed. The government has said that this will further strengthen the democratic rights of the people. The trust of common people in the government will increase.
