Automobile Desk – The month of August 2026 brought new records for the Indian automobile sector. Just before the beginning of the festive season, the country's major automobile manufacturing companies have set new sales records. In the month of August, Maruti Suzuki maintained its dominance and took the first position, while Mahindra & Mahindra and Tata Motors completely changed the market trend by registering the fastest growth on an annual basis.
This month was historic in many ways for the country's largest car company Maruti Suzuki. Maruti recorded total sales of 2,19,220 vehicles in August 2026. This includes 1,80,078 cars sold in the domestic market, 5,298 units given to other companies and 33,844 cars exported. If we talk only about domestic passenger vehicles, Maruti sold 1,76,971 vehicles, which is a huge jump compared to 1,31,278 units sold in the same month last year. With this, the company has crossed the figure of selling more than 10 lakh vehicles in the first five months of the current financial year 2026-27.

Mahindra's dominance was seen in the SUV segment. On the strength of the company's strong SUV portfolio, Mahindra delivered a total of 1,07,648 vehicles in August, including exports. This represents an impressive increase of 42 percent compared to last year. Mahindra's SUV sales in the domestic market stood at 59,257 units, which is a huge jump of about 50 percent compared to last year. The demand for the company's utility vehicles is continuously skyrocketing in the current financial year.
This month brought double happiness for Tata Motors. The company achieved a huge growth of 56 percent in overall sales and sold a total of 67,753 vehicles. Tata's sales in the domestic passenger vehicle market stood at 65,253 units. The biggest contribution to this success of Tata Motors was its Electric Vehicle (EV) segment. Tata's EV sales jumped by a massive 94 percent in August and the company sold a total of 16,549 electric cars, which proves that Indian customers are now rapidly adopting electric vehicles.
South Korean company Hyundai Motor India also inspected its strong hold in the Indian market. Hyundai recorded total sales of 65,796 vehicles in August, a year-on-year increase of 8.8 percent. The company sold 54,396 vehicles in the domestic market, which is a new record for the highest sales in any August month in Hyundai's history in India.
Kia India, a company of the same group, also achieved a new milestone in terms of sales. Kia's wholesale sales saw a massive growth of 48.1 percent and the company dispatched 29,042 vehicles to dealers in August 2026. This is Kia's best sales figure in any August month since its entry in India. Till now in 2026, Kia has sold more than 2.20 lakh cars, which speaks of its increasing popularity in the market.
