Cavaliers Eye Rookie Signing After Major Roster Reshuffle

The Cleveland Cavaliers are looking to make one final addition to their roster after a busy offseason reshuffle left the team needing another player to meet the NBA’s roster requirements.

Cleveland recently completed a major five-team transaction that brought Peyton Watson to the Cavaliers while sending Max Strus to the Los Angeles Clippers and Dennis Schröder to the Charlotte Hornets. The Cavaliers also acquired the draft rights to Ismael Kamagate from the Clippers.

The team subsequently waived Cam Whitmore, creating additional flexibility as it finalized its offseason roster.

Cavaliers Could Turn to a Draft-Rights Rookie

With the roster still requiring another player, Cleveland is reportedly considering signing a rookie whose draft rights it already controls.

Among the names under consideration are Khalifa Diop, Ismael Kamagate and Saliou Niang. Diop is viewed as a particularly straightforward option because Kamagate’s draft rights were only recently acquired, while Niang is committed to playing at LSU for the upcoming season.

The potential signing would likely come on a minimum-level contract of approximately $1.4 million for the 2026-27 season, allowing Cleveland to fill the roster spot without making another expensive move.

Peyton Watson Was the Big Offseason Addition

The Cavaliers’ latest roster shuffle was largely driven by their acquisition of Watson.

The 6-foot-8 forward arrived from Denver as part of the five-team trade and gives Cleveland another athletic, versatile defender.

Watson averaged 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.13 blocks in 54 games for the Nuggets last season while shooting 41.1% from three-point range. Cleveland believes his length and defensive versatility can allow him to play across multiple positions.

The Cavaliers also acquired Cam Whitmore in the same transaction, but ultimately waived him.

Several Familiar Faces Have Departed

The roster changes have significantly altered Cleveland’s depth chart.

Strus and Schröder both left as part of the five-team deal, while Dean Wade, Georges Niang and Larry Nance Jr. also departed during the offseason.

At the same time, Cleveland has added Watson and veteran forward Mario Hezonja, while retaining center Thomas Bryant and star guard Donovan Mitchell.

The Cavaliers also signed 2026 draft pick Meleek Thomas, who was selected 34th overall, and Ernest Udeh Jr. to a two-way contract.

Why the Final Roster Spot Matters

Cleveland’s interest in a low-cost rookie makes sense from both a roster and financial perspective.

Rather than using valuable cap flexibility on another veteran, the Cavaliers can potentially fill the final spot with a young player whose NBA rights they already own.

That approach also gives the organization an opportunity to develop a prospect internally while maintaining flexibility for future moves.

A Win-Now Cavaliers Team

The roster reshuffle comes as Cleveland continues to build around Donovan Mitchell and James Harden.

Harden agreed to a three-year contract with the Cavaliers this offseason, while Mitchell signed a four-year extension. Cleveland is clearly trying to remain competitive in the Eastern Conference after reaching the Eastern Conference Finals last season.

Adding Watson gives the team another athletic wing option, while the final rookie signing would complete the minimum roster requirement without disrupting the team’s larger plans.

For now, Khalifa Diop appears to be among the most logical candidates, but Cleveland has several options available through its existing draft rights.

The Cavaliers’ next move may be a relatively small one, but with the roster nearly finalized, it could determine the final piece of Cleveland’s 2026-27 squad.
