Cab and delivery company Uber has laid off about 3,300 employees, about 10 percent of its global workforce. The company took this step to simplify its organization, reduce management levels and reduce costs.
Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in an email to employees that the company’s business has grown significantly over the past few years, but that has caused delays in management levels and decision-making. The company now wants to work faster and easier.
These changes will happen
The number of managers will be reduced by around 20 percent. Some managers may be demoted from their managerial positions to general staff roles.
The number of small teams (1-2 members) will be almost halved.
Different delivery teams (restaurant, retail and direct delivery) will be combined.
Core service engineering and science teams will also merge.
Strictness on remote work
Uber is calling most remote workers back to the office. In the future, about 1 percent of its workforce will be able to be completely remote. The company will make major cities like New York and San Francisco its main hub. A hybrid work policy (three days in the office in a week) will also be strictly enforced.
