The International Cricket Council has made a major announcement, awarding India the 2027 Women’s Champions Trophy. Previously, this tournament was scheduled to be held in Sri Lanka. However, the ICC recently stripped Sri Lanka of the hosting rights and handed it over to India. The ICC has also announced all six participating teams, along with the cities where all the matches will be held.
The event was to be held in Sri Lanka
The ICC was displeased with the increasing interference of the government-appointed Transformation Committee in the Sri Lanka Cricket Board. The ICC had even called for elections within the Sri Lanka Cricket Board. However, elections have not yet been held. Consequently, the ICC stripped Sri Lanka of the hosting rights for the Women’s Champions Trophy. According to ICC rules, political interference in the cricket boards of any member country is unacceptable. Sri Lanka suffered a major setback, and the ICC, in a major move, stripped Sri Lanka of the hosting rights. Previously, India hosted the Women’s ODI World Cup in 2025.
India got the hosting
Besides India, Bangladesh and South Africa were also in the running to host the Champions Trophy. However, the ICC has awarded the hosting rights to India. All matches will be played in Vadodara and Mumbai, including at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. The tournament will be held in a round-robin format. The Champions Trophy matches will be played between February 14th and 28th. Along with India, Australia, England, Sri Lanka, New Zealand, and South Africa will also participate. These teams were selected based on ICC rankings. This is the first time the Women’s Champions Trophy has been held.
India recently hosted the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup 2025. All matches were played between September 30 and November 2, 2025. India performed brilliantly and won the title. They defeated South Africa Women’s team by 59 runs in the final.
