After the recent meeting of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, a new debate has started regarding India-America-Iran relations. Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has warned other countries including India to stay away from such economic activities with Iran, which can help Iran avoid US sanctions or generate revenue.
Rubio made this comment during an interview on ‘The Brian Kilmeade Show’. He was asked a question about the meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Pezeshkian and the possible new trade arrangement between India and Iran. Rubio said, “I don’t think there is any trade deal between India and Iran.”

1. Marco Rubio made it clear that America is aware that many countries of the world are maintaining diplomatic and economic relations with Iran. According to him, America itself has been in touch with Iranian representatives during the talks. “I mean, we’ve also met with some elements of the Iranian regime, had contact with them during these discussions,” Rubio said.
2. He made it clear that America’s objection is not about all kinds of contacts with Iran, but about those economic activities that can help Iran bypass American sanctions.
3. Rubio said, “I think ultimately what happens, and the president has said clearly about this, is that no country should help Iran evade sanctions. No country should help Iran create mechanisms by which it can generate revenue and then use it to sponsor terrorism and try to build nuclear weapons.”
4. Regarding possible US action, he further said, “And if countries decide to do this, then we will have to impose sanctions on them as well.” That means, if any country comes forward to help Iran, America can ban it too.
5. Rubio’s statement comes at a time when the Trump administration has intensified its strategy of increasing economic pressure against Iran. The US administration is also warning countries and companies that continue trade activities with Iran and may be accused of helping Iran avoid US sanctions.
6. A few days before the US warning, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had met Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in Bishkek. In this meeting, both the leaders discussed further strengthening the long standing relations between India and Iran.
7. After the meeting, Prime Minister Modi shared the information of the meeting on social media. He reiterated his commitment to take forward the long-standing relations between India and Iran.
8. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Prime Minister Modi expressed concern about the increasing tension in West Asia. India once again reiterated its stand that disputes and differences should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
