Lucknow, Read: The economic self-reliance of women is getting new strength through self-help groups in rural areas of Uttar Pradesh. More than 10.50 lakh self-help groups are associated with the Rural Livelihood Mission, from which about 1.25 crore rural families are benefiting. Of these, 28.16 lakh women have become 'Lakhpati Didi'.
According to Mission Director Arun Kumar, women's economic self-reliance starts with small savings, which later extends to bank loans, skill training and market linkages. Women are now creating new income opportunities in farming, animal husbandry, dairy production, food processing and service sectors.
Village economic network is getting strengthened
65,544 village organizations and 3,298 cluster level associations have been formed in the state. These organizations are playing an important role in establishing coordination among self-help groups as well as in strengthening training, financial discipline and market access.
With the expansion of self-help groups, along with connecting rural women with savings and credit facilities, they are also getting opportunities for self-employment and increasing income. Apart from agricultural work, women's participation in animal husbandry, milk production, food processing and various service activities is increasing.
With this, along with strengthening the economic role of women in rural areas, new sources of income for families are also being created.
