There is a tradition of offering butter and sugar candy to Lord Krishna on the day of Janmashtami. It is believed that Kanha is very fond of milk, curd, butter and the things made from them. In such a situation, if you want to offer some different and special Prasad to Lord Krishna this Janmashtami, then Makhana Paag can be a great option.
This prasad prepared from makhana, dry fruits and coconut is delicious and also very easy to make. It can be prepared at home with the help of few ingredients. Let us know the easy recipe of making Makhana Paag.
Ingredients for making Makhana Paag
- Phool Makhana – 3 cups (about 100 grams)
- Sugar – 1.5 cups
- Water – 3/4 cup
- Grated dry coconut – 1/2 cup
- Cashews and almonds – 1/4 cup, finely chopped
- Melon seeds (Magaj) – 2 tbsp
- Green cardamom powder – 1/2 tsp
- Desi Ghee – 3 to 4 tablespoons
First fry makhana and dry fruits
To make Makhana Paag, first take a heavy bottom pan and heat about 2 spoons of desi ghee in it. Now add chopped cashews, almonds and melon seeds and fry till they become light golden. Take out the roasted dry fruits in a plate and keep aside.
Now add remaining ghee in the same pan, add makhana and fry on low flame for about 5-6 minutes while stirring continuously. When the makhana becomes nicely crispy and starts breaking easily when pressed with a finger, turn off the gas.
After the makhana cools down, put them in a mixer and grind them coarsely. After this, lightly fry the grated dry coconut in the pan.
Now prepare one string syrup
Put sugar and water in a pan and cook on medium flame. After the sugar dissolves completely, let the syrup boil for a few minutes.
One wire syrup has to be prepared for Makhana Paag. To check this, take a drop of syrup between thumb and finger. If a thin string like syrup starts forming when you separate both the fingers, then understand that the syrup is ready.
Now add green cardamom powder to it and mix well.
Mix makhana and remaining ingredients in syrup
Now reduce the gas flame to very low. Add coarsely ground makhana, roasted coconut and pre-roasted cashews, almonds and melon seeds to the prepared syrup.
Mix all the ingredients well and stir continuously. Continue cooking until the mixture thickens and leaves the bottom of the pan. Keep in mind that do not cook the mixture too much, otherwise the Paag may become too hard.
Spread it on a plate and do the cutting.
Now take a plate or tray and apply some desi ghee on it and grease it. Immediately turn the prepared makhana mixture into a plate and spread it evenly with the help of a spoon.
When the mixture remains lukewarm, cut it with a knife into the shape of your choice. You can cut it into square pieces or barfi shapes.
After it cools completely, separate the pieces. Your delicious and crunchy Makhana Paag is ready.
Offer food to Kanha like this
On the day of Janmashtami, decorate Makhana Paag in a clean plate and offer it to Lord Krishna. Keeping Tulsi group in Bhog is also considered auspicious. After this the Prasad can be distributed among the family members.
This Janmashtami, if you want to make something new for Kanha along with traditional Makhan-Mishri, then you can definitely try this Makhana Paag.
