Chennai, 03 September 2026: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has made several important announcements with the aim of taking the state's sports infrastructure to new heights. Chief Minister Vijay has announced plans to convert Chennai into an 'Olympic City'. Apart from this, he has also announced the construction of 'Motor Sports City' in Chennai to organize the Formula 1 race.

On Thursday, Chief Minister Vijay announced the establishment of a world-class 'Tamil Nadu Olympic City' and a dedicated 'Motorsports City' to host Formula 1 (F1) races in Chennai. The objective of these projects is to produce international level players in the state and boost economic development through tourism and automobile manufacturing sectors.

Chief Minister Vijay had said in the Assembly that the talent of youth in motorsports will be recognized and they will be provided training and racing opportunities, so that they can become national and international level champions.

What facilities will there be in Olympic City?

Chief Minister Vijay had announced in the Assembly on Thursday that his government will establish a world class 'Tamil Nadu Olympic City' in Chennai. The Olympic City will be developed by the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu and will include world-class sports grounds, state-of-the-art sports equipment, high-end training centers as well as dedicated centers for sports science and sports medicine.

This facility will also have modern infrastructure including accommodation for players and coaches.

Objective of Olympic City

Olympic City aims to create an integrated sports center to provide advanced training and support facilities to athletes, thereby enabling Tamil Nadu athletes to win more medals at the Olympic Games and other international sporting events.

Vijay said, “Training infrastructure including world class facilities, infrastructure meeting Olympic standards and residential facilities will be developed. This will help Chennai host international events and produce Olympians.”

Motorsports city also announced

The Chief Minister had also announced that a dedicated motorsports city would be set up in Chennai to organize Formula 1-4 races. A motorsports city will also be built in Chennai to organize Formula 1 races.

Young talent in motorsports will be identified and training and racing opportunities will be provided to produce national and international level champions. The establishment of world-class motor racing circuits will create opportunities for tourism, specialized vehicle manufacturing industries, employment and economic development.
