Mitsubishi Motors Corporation has officially taken the wraps off the completely redesigned all-new Mitsubishi Pajero at its global debut in Tokyo. The iconic SUV returns as a new-generation flagship, bringing one of the most significant transformations in the model’s history.

The latest Pajero combines a newly developed diesel powertrain with advanced four-wheel-drive technology, modern safety systems and a more premium cabin. The redesign represents the biggest update to the legendary nameplate in around two decades.

New 2.4-Litre Clean Diesel Engine Produces 480 Nm Torque

Powering the new Mitsubishi Pajero is a newly developed 2.4-litre clean diesel engine designed to deliver strong performance across different driving conditions.

The engine generates a substantial 480 Nm of peak torque and uses a wide-range single variable geometry turbocharger. According to Mitsubishi, this setup provides strong pulling power from low speeds while also delivering confident performance during highway driving.

The diesel engine is paired with a newly developed 8-speed automatic transmission. The gearbox has also been designed to offer smoother and quicker shifts, whether the SUV is being driven on normal roads or challenging off-road terrain.

A dedicated Sport Mode has also been added for drivers looking for a more responsive driving experience.

Mitsubishi Pajero Launch Plans and Global Markets

Production of the new-generation Pajero will take place at Mitsubishi’s manufacturing facility in Thailand.

Thailand will be the first market to receive the SUV, followed by launches in Japan and Australia during fiscal 2026which runs from April 2026 to March 2027.

Mitsubishi plans a much wider international rollout from fiscal 2027 onwards. The SUV is expected to reach nearly 100 countriesincluding markets across:

• ASEAN nations
• Latin America
• The Middle East

In selected international markets, the SUV will continue to be sold under the Mitsubishi Montero name.

A Legendary SUV With More Than 40 Years of History

The Mitsubishi Pajero first entered the market in 1982 and quickly established itself as one of the world’s most recognised off-road SUVs.

Over the decades, the Pajero became known for combining serious off-road capability with the comfort expected from a passenger vehicle. It also played an important role in the growing popularity of recreational vehicles during the 1990s.

Across four generations, Mitsubishi has sold more than 3.29 million Pajero units in over 170 countries and regions.

The new model continues the philosophy of Confidence and Comfortwhile Mitsubishi has introduced a third defining element for its flagship SUV: Prestige.

New Mitsubishi Pajero Design Inspired by Japanese Craftsmanship

The exterior of the all-new Pajero receives a bold and modern appearance while retaining design references to its heritage.

Mitsubishi says the front-end styling draws inspiration from Kendothe traditional Japanese martial art. Buyers will have a choice between two different grille designs:

• Horizontal-bar grille
• Honeycomb-pattern grille

The SUV also gets distinctive T-shaped headlights and a redesigned C-pillar inspired by the roll bar design of the original first-generation Pajero.

At the rear, Mitsubishi has incorporated a hexagonal design element that pays tribute to the original Pajero’s rear-mounted spare wheel.

Premium Cabin With Dual 14.3-Inch Displays

The interior of the new Mitsubishi Pajero has received a major technology and comfort upgrade.

The dashboard features two large 14.3-inch digital displaysgiving the cabin a more modern and premium appearance.

Mitsubishi has also reinvented the Pajero’s traditional triple-gauge setup as the new Multi-Meter. This display provides useful information for off-road driving, including:

• Altitude
• Compass direction
• Vehicle pitch angle
• Vehicle roll angle

The cabin also uses soft-touch materials and decorative stitching inspired by the traditional Japanese Kimekomi craftsmanship technique.

Advanced 4WD System and Seven Drive Modes

One of the biggest highlights of the new Pajero is its upgraded off-road technology.

For the first time, Mitsubishi has combined its Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) system with Super Select 4WD-II (SS4-II).

The integrated system is designed to manage acceleration, braking and cornering to improve stability and control across different surfaces.

The new Pajero offers seven selectable drive modes:

• Normal
• Eco
• Gravel
• Snow
• Mud
• Sand
• Rock

Mitsubishi has also equipped the SUV with a 3D Multi Around Monitor. A front under-floor camera view helps drivers better understand the terrain underneath the vehicle, particularly while navigating steep slopes or rocky surfaces.

Stronger Chassis Designed for Comfort and Off-Roading

The new Pajero continues to use a traditional ladder-frame construction, but Mitsubishi has strengthened the structure through greater use of high-tensile steel.

The suspension setup includes an independent double-wishbone system at the front and a newly developed five-link rigid rear axle.

Mitsubishi says the chassis has been engineered around an “off-road comfort” philosophy, aiming to deliver both rugged capability and improved ride quality.

Eight Airbags and Advanced Safety Features

Safety has received significant attention in the all-new Mitsubishi Pajero.

The SUV comes with an eight-airbag packageincluding Mitsubishi’s first-ever SRS centre airbag.

Another new addition is Emergency Lane Assistwhich is being introduced to the Pajero for the first time.

The SUV also gets Mitsubishi’s MI-PILOT highway driving assistance systemcombining features such as:

• Adaptive cruise control
• Lane-keeping assistance

The Pajero is additionally equipped with Forward Collision Mitigationcapable of detecting pedestrians, cyclists and motorcyclists.

Seven-Seat Layout With Improved Comfort

The new Pajero continues to offer a three-row, seven-seat configuration.

The second row has a 150mm sliding rangeallowing passengers to adjust legroom according to their needs. A tumble mechanism has also been introduced to make entering and exiting the third row easier.

Comfort-focused features include:

• Ventilated seats
• Three-zone automatic climate control
• Enhanced sound insulation
• Acoustic glass for front and rear windows

These improvements are intended to reduce outside noise and make conversations inside the cabin easier, even during high-speed highway journeys.

Yamaha-Developed 12-Speaker Audio System

Mitsubishi has partnered with Yamaha Corporation to develop the Pajero’s premium sound system.

The setup includes 12 speakers and dual amplifiersalong with noise-compensation technology that automatically adjusts sound settings according to the vehicle’s speed.

The system is designed to maintain consistent audio quality despite changes in road and wind noise.

Mitsubishi Says New Pajero Will Lead Its Future Product Strategy

Keisuke Kishiura, President and Chief Operating Officer of Mitsubishi Motors, said the new Pajero represents an important step in the company’s long-term strategy.

Under Mitsubishi’s vision for the 2030s, the company aims to strengthen its brand, improve customer satisfaction and increase corporate value through distinctive products.

According to Kishiura, the all-new Pajero is the first vehicle designed to reflect this future vision and will play a leading role not only in the Pajero lineup but across Mitsubishi Motors’ wider range of vehicles.
