LPG consumption in India : There has been a significant decline in the consumption of LPG (cooking gas) used in domestic and other sectors in India. The country’s LPG consumption fell by around 16% to 11.3 million tonnes between April and August 2026. The figure was 13.4 million tonnes in the corresponding period of the previous financial year.
According to data from the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell of the Ministry of Petroleum, this drop in LPG consumption has come at a time when tensions and wars in West Asia have affected LPG supply. The government is also focusing on connecting more households to PNG (piped natural gas).
Government focus on PNG shifts
The Ministry of Petroleum has asked States and Union Territories to facilitate the shift from LPG to PNG in their respective districts. Officials have been directed to appoint nodal officers to work closely with gas companies and oil companies.
The government believes that PNG is a safe, clean and convenient fuel for cooking. Use of PNG can also reduce pressure on delivery and transportation of LPG cylinders.
Petrol and diesel consumption increased
LPG consumption also fell by 16 percent in August. LPG consumption has declined to 2.4 million tonnes in August 2025. Although demand for LPG has declined, consumption of petrol and diesel has increased. During April-August, petrol consumption rose 6.4 percent to 18.9 million tonnes, while diesel consumption rose 4.3 percent to 40.5 million tonnes.
In August, petrol consumption rose 7.9 percent to 3.8 million tons, and diesel consumption rose 6.4 percent to nearly 7 million tons. According to experts, due to changes in rainfall patterns, farmers in many areas had to use more diesel pumps to irrigate their crops.
LPG supply from US increased
India is now trying to reduce its dependence on Gulf countries for LPG. The first eight months of 2026 have seen a significant change in sources of LPG imports. In August, the United States supplied around 276,000 tonnes of LPG to India, while the UAE supplied around 68,000 tonnes of LPG.
After the rupture in the Strait of Hormuz, the United States has emerged as India’s largest supplier of LPG. India imports about 60 percent of its LPG requirements. Earlier, about 90 percent of these imports came from the Gulf countries, transiting through the Strait of Hormuz.
