During the demonstration, AASU members conducted a symbolic funeral procession of Assam Supply Minister Kaushik Rai, moving from in front of Shaheed Bhawan at Chowkidingi to Chowkidingi Chariali. Protesters raised slogans critical of the state government’s handling of the price increases.

The protest culminated in the burning of an effigy of the Supply Minister as part of the demonstration.

Pratima Sonowal, president of the AASU Dibrugarh district committee, described the prices of essential commodities in Assam as “skyrocketing” and accused the government of failing to take effective measures despite having received a memorandum on the issue from the organization.

She stated, “It seems that the state Supply Minister Kaushik Rai has died. Therefore, treating him as dead, we carried out his funeral procession today and burnt his effigy.”

Sonowal further alleged that the government had remained silent in the face of repeated demands to control rising prices, compelling AASU members to protest publicly.

The student organization called for immediate action to regulate the prices of essential commodities and urged improvements in the functioning of the Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs Department. They also expressed concerns regarding the public distribution system and demanded measures to ensure essential food items remain accessible and affordable for the general public.

AASU members emphasized that the continuing price increases were imposing a greater financial burden on ordinary households and appealed to the state government to implement prompt and effective measures to alleviate consumer distress.

The protest featured slogans against the price rise and criticized the state government’s management of essential commodity distribution. The symbolic funeral procession and effigy burning formed integral parts of AASU’s broader program of demonstrations in Dibrugarh.
