New Delhi: Large generative AI platforms around the world suddenly came to a standstill. OpenAI's ChatGPT, Anthropic's Claude and XAI's Grok were not working for thousands of users on Thursday night. Users complained about errors, lack of response and difficulty accessing the service.
Thousands of complaints in India and America
According to outage tracking website Downdetector, till around 8:30 pm, more than 2,800 reports were filed regarding ChatGPT in India alone. There were about 170 complaints to Claude and more than 70 complaints to Grok.
This problem was not limited to India only. Its impact was even bigger in America. According to Downdetector data, more than 35,000 reports were filed in the US for ChatGPT, more than 1,400 for Claude, and more than 1,200 for Grok.
The sudden increase in complaints clearly points to a possible outage and technical glitch. Downdetector tracks service interruptions based on user reports.
All three companies admitted the error
Users were facing problems in starting chat, generating replies and logging in. Many users reported that after sending the prompt, an error message is appearing on the screen or no response is being received.
An incident to ChatGPT work mode also appeared on OpenAI's status page on Thursday. The company admitted that high error rates were occurring and later said that the problem has been fixed. Similarly, on the status page of Anthropic, more errors were seen in the Claude model on Thursday.
The company said it has identified the cause of the error affecting multiple models and is working on a fix. There was also disruption in XAI's service regarding Grok, although detailed updates are awaited from the company.
Why did all three AIs go down simultaneously?
It is considered quite unusual for three big AI platforms to be down at the same time. Experts believe it could be to a common cloud infrastructure, network issue or back-end update, but no company has yet confirmed a causal link. At present, the companies are busy in completely stabilizing the service and users have been advised to keep an eye on the status page.
