There is a name recorded in the world of crime of Rajasthan, remembering which even today people shudder. This is the name of Kanpatimar Shankaria. In the 1970s, his terror had spread so much in Jaipur and surrounding areas that people were afraid to go out alone at night. Shankaria committed so many murders in just a few months that both the police and the general public were shocked.

Who was Kanpatimar Shankaria?

Kanpatimar Shankaria was born in the year 1952 in Jaipur, Rajasthan. Initially he was not a big name in the world of crime, but gradually he started getting involved in thefts and crimes. Between 1977 and 1978, he committed several consecutive murders. According to police records and media reports, he was accused of nearly 70 murders.

How was “Kanpatimar” formed?

Shankaria used a special method for murder. He used to hit the back of his victim's head with a hammer below the ear i.e. near the temple. Because of this method, he was given the name “Kanapatimar”. It is said that he often targeted people walking alone at night. He would attack suddenly and the victim would not even get a chance to recover.

After the murder he said, “It was fun to kill.”

When he was interrogated after being arrested by the police, his statements further frightened people. According to reports, he had said that he enjoyed attacking with a hammer. His confession surprised even the investigating officers.

It was a big challenge for the police

The greatest difficulty with Shankaria's crimes was that there appeared to be no apparent connection between most of his victims. The incidents happening at different places had posed a challenge to the police. After a long investigation and clues, the police finally succeeded in catching him. After his arrest, he was tried and the court sentenced him to death.

Hanged at the age of 27

Kanpatimar Shankaria was hanged on 16 May 1979 in Jaipur. At that time his age was only 27 years. Before his execution, he expressed remorse for his crimes and said that no one should be like him.
