Taking a major step towards road safety in India, the central government is preparing to launch the second phase of 'Bharat New Car Assessment Program' i.e. Bharat NCAP 2.0. The announcement was made by Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari at the 66th Annual Conference of the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) in New Delhi.

The new rules will be applicable from October 2027

This new phase of Bharat NCAP 2.0 will be officially implemented from October 2027. Under this new phase, the entire 'safety chain' of vehicles will be re-evaluated. All the tests and regulations for this have been completed and the new updates will be communicated to the vehicle manufacturing companies and bodies soon.

Need for strict rules for youth safety

Stating that the statistics of road accidents in India are alarming, Gadkari explained that the strength of vehicles and the safety of passengers are very important. About 5 lakh road accidents occur every year in the country, in which about 1.80 lakh people lose their lives. Critically, as many as 60% of those who lose their lives in these accidents are young people between the ages of 18 and 36. Bharat NCAP 2.0 will use world-class technology and advanced safety systems developed by Indian startups to prevent these accidents.

Global NCAP 75 percent cheaper than

This safety test program of India is getting praise at the international level as well. The program has recently been honored with an international award in Morocco. The Indian Bharat NCAP test is as much as 75 percent cheaper as compared to the global crash test. Where testing a vehicle under Global NCAP costs around Rs 2.5 crore, in Bharat NCAP the test is conducted for just Rs 60 lakh.

So far, more than 30 vehicles from 11 different companies have been successfully crash tested under this program. Due to low cost and accurate results in less time, many foreign vehicle manufacturers have also expressed their desire to crash test their cars in India.
