Kumbhalgarh Fort, located amidst the high hills of Aravalli in Rajsamand district of Rajasthan, is one of the largest and historical forts of India. This fort is not only famous for its strong security system, but is also considered a symbol of the glorious history and stories of bravery of Mewar. Construction of Kumbhalgarh Fort

Kumbhalgarh Fort was built by Maharana Kumbha of Mewar between the years 1443 to 1458 AD. Maharana Kumbha was one of the great rulers of Rajasthan and he built many forts to strengthen the security of Mewar. The architectural construction of the fort was done under the supervision of the famous architect Mandan. Being situated on the Aravali hills, this fort was naturally very safe.

The biggest feature of Kumbhalgarh is its huge wall. Its wall is about 36 kilometers long, which is included among the longest fortified walls in the world. For this reason it is sometimes also called the “Great Wall of India”. The wall is so wide that many horses can walk simultaneously at many places. Its strong structure made it extremely difficult for enemies to enter the fort.

Birthplace of Maharana Pratap

The history of Kumbhalgarh is deeply connected with Maharana Pratap. Maharana Pratap, the great warrior of Mewar, was born in this fort in the year 1540 AD. Maharana Pratap fought against the Mughal emperor Akbar and displayed his bravery in the battle of Haldighati (1576). Kumbhalgarh still reminds us of their courage and self-respect.

Kumbhalgarh Fort is among the six forts of Rajasthan which got the status of UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year 2013. It also includes the forts of Amer, Chittorgarh, Ranthambore, Gagron and Jaisalmer.
