A case of assault with Congress city district president Madan Gopal Meghwal has come to light in Bikaner, Rajasthan. During a program, four youths surrounded him and beat him with slaps and punches. A video of this also went viral on social media. Those who beat him were also Congress leaders who had accused Madan Meghwal of cutting the ticket. After this, there was a political uproar in Rajasthan and many leaders condemned those youths. Many such incidents have taken place during the local elections in Rajasthan which have raised questions on the district president model of the Congress Party.

Is it difficult to become a district president model?

Local body elections are being held in Rajasthan and in these elections the Congress Party is fielding candidates on its symbol. The candidates were not announced by the party till the last moment. There was ruckus over tickets at many places. In many districts, disputes were seen between the district president of the Congress party and the local MLA or former MLA and other leaders. There was discussion among the party regarding tickets for several days. Rahul Gandhi said that district presidents will have a role in deciding the tickets of MPs and MLAs, but even in the local body elections, district presidents did not play a role.

In most of the districts, old established leaders of Congress were successful in getting tickets for their supporters for the local body elections. Many MLAs and former MLAs reached Jaipur for ministerial tickets. Factionalism within the Congress Party came to the fore during this period. The tickets of district presidents did not go into distribution within the party, rather there were reports of increased factionalism due to them.
