Janmashtami 2026: For many decades now, Lord Krishna continues to be one of the most interesting personas for filmmakers in India. However, every generation has its own interpretation of Lord Krishna. For the audience that was entertained by Doordarshan in the past, Krishna can never be anything other than the serene smiles and wisdom of Nitish Bharadwaj in Mahabharat. On the other hand, some audience members may recall the intricacies of Krishna Leela that were depicted in Ramanand Sagar’s Shri Krishna whereas some newer generations saw Bal Krishna through animation as well as TV serials.

While interpretations keep changing with time, the childhood pranks of Lord Krishna, his affair with Radha, struggle against the forces of evil and the philosopher-strategist persona keep making their way onto the screens. In honour of Krishna Janmashtami that is celebrated on September 4 this year, here are six movies and TV shows that depict the stories of Krishna Leela.

Mahabharat — Nitish Bharadwaj's Krishna Became An Icon

B.R. Chopra’s Mahabharat is one of the more memorable mythological serials produced for Indian television, and one of the key reasons for this is the performance of Nitish Bharadwaj as Lord Krishna. Having been first broadcasted in 1988, the series revolves around the Mahabharat, but gradually Krishna comes to be one of the central characters of the series.

While not highlighting just his divine powers or his childhood exploits, he is portrayed as a friend, a mentor, strategist, and philosopher. His interaction with Arjuna and the consequent Bhagavad Gita episode resulted in the audience seeing a Lord Krishna who was more wise than divine. The subtle performance of Bharadwaj was so synonymous with Lord Krishna that even decades later it is one of the more recognized performances of Krishna on Indian television.

Shri Krishna — A Detailed Journey Through Krishna Leela

While the Mahabharat TV serial depicts the character of Krishna through his participation in the epic war, Ramanand Sagar’s TV serial Shri Krishna depicts the life of Krishna as the central theme of the serial. The television serial that started being aired from 1993 onwards has narrated various phases of life of Krishna, taking inspiration from literary and other traditions to Krishna. Be it his childhood years spent in Gokul and Vrindavan or his relationship with Radha Rani and the subsequent phase when he participated in political and spiritual events.

It is Sarvadaman D. Banerjee who got immensely famous as adult Krishna, whereas the devotion theme of the serial has made it immensely popular in households during the 1990s. For those searching for a traditional and elaborate story of Janmashtami this year, Shri Krishna can be considered an appropriate choice.

Little Krishna — Bal Krishna’s Mischief Gets An Animated Makeover

Every Krishna story does not have to be that of an epic battle. Little Krishna brings the audience to Vrindavan and tells stories about the adventurous time in Krishna’s life.

Launched as a 3D animated series in 2009, the series follows young Krishna in the company of Yashoda, Nanda, Balarama, Radha, and his friends while also showing how he deals with the perils thrown at him by Kamsa. The stories include elements of adventure, mythology, and the well-known mischievous nature of Krishna, which make these stories easy for children to relate to.

But most importantly, the stories are very different from any other mythological TV series. While Krishna is portrayed in a variety of ways in many TV series, Little Krishna brings to us the Bal Krishna—the child who steals butter and beats those stronger than himself through charm.

Krishna Aur Kans — Krishna Leela Meets Big-Screen Animation

Krishna Aur Kans extends the legend of childhood by making the fight between Krishna and his villainous uncle into an animated drama. Produced in 2012 and directed by Vikram Veturi, the film traces Krishna’s journey in his younger days and how he finally faces Kans at the end.

What made this film unique and special was the Hindi voice cast for an Indian mythological animated film. Kans is voiced by Om Puri, while Yashoda is voiced by Juhi Chawla. Also, Manoj Bajpayee, Anupam Kher, Sachin Pilgaonkar and Supriya Pilgaonkar were some of the other actors who voiced in the film. What makes the film so interesting to be seen on Janmashtami day is that the film is about mythology along with actions and animations and not a television show.

RadhaKrishn — Krishna’s Story Through Love And Devotion

Whereas earlier stories had focused on the various struggles of Krishna’s political reign, RadhaKrishn brought the attention back to what is perhaps the most popular aspect of the Krishna mythology – his relationship with Radha. The show, which aired in 2018, featured Sumedh Mudgalkar as Krishna and Mallika Singh as Radha.

Even as it moved to cover various stages in the life of Krishna, RadhaKrishn’s emotional core was the eternal love between Radha and Krishna. Romanticism, devotion, separation and spirituality came together using visuals that were far more elaborate than previous mythological series.

RadhaKrishn also brought Krishna into the modern era by bringing him to new generations through TV, making it one of the most identifiable contemporary mythological shows based on the deity.

Krishnavataram Part 1: The Heart — Krishna Gets A Modern Cinematic Retelling

The most recent entry on this list might also serve as a most explicit example of continued reinterpretations of Krishna myths for the contemporary audience. Hardik Gajjar's 2026 film Krishnavataram Part 1: The Heart (Hridayam) features Siddharth Gupta as Krishna, Sushmitha Bhatt as Radha, Sanskruti Jayana as Satyabhama, and Nivaashiyni Krishnan as Rukmini.

Unlike earlier versions that tend to focus exclusively on a single myth, Gajjar decided to examine various aspects of the Krishna myths including his early years in Vrindavan and relationship with Radha, as well as his relationships with Rukmini and Satyabhama and his quest for Dwarka. It is interesting to note that the plot of the film unfolds through the eyes of Satyabhama, thus providing an alternative point of view on the well-known mythology. Additionally, this film gained popularity because of its interpretation of the myth about Radha and Krishna Raas Leela.

Krishna Leela Continues To Change With Every Generation

What distinguishes this list of six movies is the varied way in which the same character has been portrayed in each of them. While Mahabharat presents Krishna as a thinker and strategist, Shri Krishna seeks to portray him through all the various phases of his life. Little Krishna portrays the naughty aspects of his childhood, while Krishna Aur Kans uses this element as the base for animation. While RadhaKrishn focuses on love, Krishnavataram is the most recent attempt to retell the story of Krishna using films.

Though the technology, actors and even the manner in which stories have been narrated may keep changing, Krishna Leela has been a consistent feature in Indian cinema.
