Rohit Sharma to Play 2027 ODI WC? BCCI Comes Clean on Role of ‘Hitman’ in Team India

When the BCCI met in a meeting on September 3, one of the talking points was future in Team India with the in focus.

Well, the has officially announced that it is in Rohit's corner. BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia addressed the media after the event and said that there was no truth about retirement rumours.

BCCI Bats for Rohit Sharma?

Saikia added that Rohit was playing well and there is no danger at the moment to his place in the ODI side. Rohit has already quit Tests and T20Is so an ODI retirement will mean an international farewell.

"He is playing superbly in all matches. He scored 130 in the last match he played. So, what more do you want? Why is there speculation? I don't want to give fodder to speculation," he said.

What Else Happened at the Meeting?

"So, today we did not have any selection meeting. We had a routine meeting, like we have frequent meetings after the interval of a good three months. We had a meeting today with the head coach, the head of cricket, COE, as well as two of the captains, the T20 captain for us, as well as the Test and ODI captain, Shubman,' he added.

"We basically discussed how our team performed in England and Ireland, basically, and also what we are going to do in the next one year. So, the roadmap has been prepared, and we'll be doing some exercises so that we have a very good performance in 2027," he went on to say.

Retirement Rumours Around 'Hitman'

Saikia was the one who had downplayed rumours that the Lord's ODI vs England on July 19 was Rohit's last. Rohit had slammed a brilliant 138 in that game even though India lost to surrender the series 2-1. Ahead of the BCCI meeting, a PTI report claimed that when it was communicated to Rohit before Lord's that the selectors were moving on, 'Hitman' was angry but had 'agreed to retire'. Now all speculation is done as BCCI has made its stance on Rohit clear.

Dream Exit Loading?

Rohit is 39 and has been around since 2007. During the next ODI World Cup, he will be 40. If he can win it, it will be the dream farewell which the legend deserves. The mega event is a little over a year away, and Rohit's next ODI appearance is vs West Indies on September 27.

No ODI World Cup Title

It is interesting to note that while Rohit has won two Champions Trophies and two T20 World Cups, once as skipper and once as player in each tournament, he has never won the ODI World Cup. He was not in the 2011 squad and in 2023, led India to the final but lost. He's not won the World Test Championship either despite two title clash appearances, again once as player and once as skipper, but winning that is out of the question as Rohit no longer plays the longest format. So, the ODI World Cup dream is still on the cards. Shall he realise it? Time will tell!
