London. A big study has revealed a shocking thing regarding the habit of sitting continuously for long periods. According to the research, every additional hour of prolonged sitting time per day without a break was associated with a 9% higher risk of death from cancer. At the same time, replacing one hour of sitting time with light physical activity was found to reduce the risk of death from cancer by 12%.
This study has been done by Frederick Ho and his colleagues at the University of Glasgow. The research analyzed the association between chronic sitting and several health outcomes to cancer.
Not only death due to cancer, but also to many types of cancer.
The study found an association between prolonged continuous sitting and an increased risk of death from cancer. In addition, prolonged sitting was also associated with increased overall cancer incidence and several obesity- cancers.
These included cancers involving the food pipe, liver, kidney, pancreas, large intestine, breast, ovary and thyroid.

Benefits of light activity instead of sitting for an hour
An important finding of the study was that replacing continuous sitting time with light physical activity was found to be associated with reduced risk. According to research, if light activity is done instead of one hour of continuous sitting, the risk of death from cancer was found to be reduced by 12%.
This suggests that it may be important to incorporate small amounts of physical activity into daily routines rather than strenuous exercise.
Getting up occasionally can be a way of protection
The research also found positive signs of breaking periods of continuous sitting with light activity in between. Doing so was associated with reduced risk for all major health outcomes included in the study.
That is, instead of sitting at one place for a long time, getting up from time to time, walking a few steps or doing light activity can be beneficial for the body.
What message does the study give?
The findings of the study point to the need to pay attention to the modern lifestyle involving prolonged sitting. Especially for people who spend large portions of the day sitting continuously for work, travel, or other reasons, it may be important to break up long periods of sitting with light activity.
However, the data revealed in the study show an association; These should not be read as proving that sitting alone causes cancer.
