New Delhi .External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar clarified India's stand on buying oil from Russia in Ukraine's capital Kiev. He said that the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine will not be resolved by any country buying or not buying Russian oil. According to him, the way to end the war is through dialogue, diplomacy and serious negotiations.

Jaishankar said that India is ready to provide all possible cooperation in efforts to resolve the Ukraine crisis and end the conflict. He also clarified that Ukraine has its own point of view and India respects it. At the same time, India also keeps in mind its energy needs and the needs of its approximately 1.4 billion population.

The issue of buying oil from Russia has been a major topic of discussion between India and western countries for the last few years. India continued purchasing Russian oil after the war between Russia and Ukraine broke out in 2022. Questions have been raised on this policy by America and European countries, whereas India has been saying that ensuring energy security is its primary responsibility.

There were major changes in the global energy market after the war. Amidst the sanctions imposed on Russia and changes in the traditional supply system, Russian oil became available in the international market under different conditions. India took decisions to energy purchase keeping in mind its need, price and availability. New Delhi has argued that it is necessary to provide reliable and affordable energy to the country's large population.

On the question of possible sanctions or tariffs being imposed by America on countries purchasing oil from Russia, Jaishankar also stated India's priority. He said that the current global energy situation is difficult and it is important for a big country like India to ensure availability of energy. He indicated that no single trade decision could be used as the basis for resolving the war.

Jaishankar is on a three-day visit to Ukraine and Poland. In Kiev he met with President Volodymyr Zelensky and Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiha. During this, apart from bilateral relations, regional and global issues were discussed. India has consistently maintained that a solution should be found through dialogue rather than finding a solution on the battlefield.

Jaishankar also mentioned the recent attack in Kiev, in which an Indian citizen was killed. Expressing condolences for the deceased, he expressed sympathy for the affected families. India has previously expressed its concerns regarding the safety of civilians during the conflict.

In the conversation with the Foreign Minister of Ukraine, the issue of attacks on commercial ships in the Black Sea and the safety of Indian sailors was also raised. Jaishankar said that Indian sailors work on commercial ships from different countries of the world and attacks on sea routes affect them too.

India says targeting civilian and commercial ships is not acceptable. The impact of disruptions in sea lanes is not limited to ships and crews, but global supplies of fuel, food and fertilizers can also be affected. In such a situation, India is emphasizing on dialogue and diplomacy keeping in mind the wider human and economic impacts associated with the war.
