Sangam Super Specialty Eye Hospital, Gorakhpur has received official registration and permission from the Directorate General of Medical Education and Training, Government of Uttar Pradesh for Cornea Transplant. This permission has been granted under the Transplantation of Human Organs and Tissues Act (THOTA) of the Government of India. This registration of the hospital will remain effective for five years from August 31, 2026.

After this recognition, patients suffering from many conditions including serious disease, whitening or opacity of the cornea, serious infection, injury, corneal dystrophy etc. will now have less compulsion to go to other big cities for cornea transplant.

Modern cornea transplant facility will be available under the supervision of expert doctors in Gorakhpur itself.
Medical director and senior eye surgeon of the hospital, Dr. Y. Singh expressed his gratitude to the Uttar Pradesh government and Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for this achievement. He said that the government recognition is important not only for the hospital but for the patients of entire Purvanchal who have lost their vision due to serious corneal disease. The hospital's endeavor will be to provide expert and quality treatment to the needy patients.

Dr. Singh said that the cornea is the transparent front part of the eye, through which light enters the eye. When it becomes damaged or opaque, vision cannot be restored with normal glasses or medicines. In many such cases, corneal transplant becomes an effective treatment to restore vision.

Corneal blindness continues to be a major public health challenge in India. According to expert estimates, about 12 to 13 lakh people in the country are affected by corneal blindness, while every year about 25 to 30 thousand new patients join this problem. The number of available donor corneas is also less than the requirement.
Dr. Singh said that eye donation and cornea transplant are directly to each other. Donating one person's eyes can bring light back into the life of someone else in need. Therefore, it is very important to increase public awareness regarding eye donation.

The special thing is that this recognition received during the Eye Donation Awareness Fortnight running from 25th August to 8th September makes the message of eye donation and vision conservation more important.
