New Delhi : National Highways Authority of IndiaThe Supreme Court on Thursday raised a question regarding NHAI parking. The court asked why the toll plazas could not monitor the highways by installing cameras and setting up a dedicated monitoring cell. The court said that encroachment and wrongly parked vehicles on the roadside is a major problem.
NHAI informed the court that regular patrolling has been ordered to prevent unauthorized parking on highways. The court raised the question during the hearing of an accident in Phalodi, Rajasthan, in which 15 people died.

In November last year, the Supreme Court had taken its own action on the November 2 road accident at Phalodi. In this accident, a Tempo Traveler collided with a parked trailer truck. The incident took place near Matoda village on Bharatmala highway. Tempo Traveler was on its way to Jodhpur from Kolayat Temple in Bikaner.
Accidents caused by vehicles parked on the roadside
The bench asked NHAI, why can't you consider a surveillance system using cameras? Monitoring cells can be set up at all toll plazas. Senior advocate A. who assisted the Supreme Court in this case. N. S. Nadkarni said that illegal parking of vehicles on the highway is a big problem and it leads to road accidents. The bench noted that the KK, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Tamil Nadu government are yet to file a compliance affidavit in the matter.
Interim instructions regarding highway parking and dhabas
No heavy or commercial vehicle shall be parked on the main road or pavement of the national highway. Such vehicles shall be permitted to stop only at designated parking spaces, lay-bys or roadside passenger facilities. The court also prohibited the construction of new taverns, restaurants or commercial buildings within the limits of any national highway. The Supreme Court directed the NHAI to identify and publish a complete list of accident prone areas.
