New Delhi. Natural disaster has caused huge devastation in the neighboring country Nepal. The situation remains extremely critical due to severe floods and massive landslides. More than 1,290 people have lost their lives so far in this terrible devastation, while thousands of people are still missing. Relief and rescue teams are continuously searching for people amid the debris and water. The biggest challenge in this tragedy has become to identify the bodies which have been badly damaged. At the time of this humanitarian crisis, India has taken a very important decision by extending a helping hand towards its neighboring country.

India will provide 'free DNA profiling' facility: The Government of India has announced to provide the facility of 'Free DNA Profiling' for accurate identification of those killed and missing in the disaster. This step by India has become a ray of hope for those families who are wandering in search of their loved ones.

This humanitarian and technical assistance will work in the following manner.

Free Forensic Investigation: This service will be provided completely free of cost to the families of the victims in the central and state level forensic laboratories of India.

Samples of relatives: People whose relatives are missing in the Nepal disaster can give their samples at their nearest forensic center in India. In this, only parents, children or siblings (first-degree relatives) can give their sample.

Data transfer to Nepal Administration: The DNA profile report prepared from these samples will be shared with the Government of Nepal and the local administration. With this, unidentified dead bodies can be matched and identified quickly and accurately.

India ready for all possible help

The infrastructure in Nepal has been completely destroyed and it may take a long time for life to return to normal. In this time of crisis, India is continuously sending food, medicines and other essential relief materials to Nepal. With technical and forensic assistance, the process of identification of dead bodies will be expedited, which will provide the victims' families the opportunity to perform the last rites of their relatives with dignity.

This step of India not only reflects the strong relations between the two countries, but also underlines the role of a true friend in times of crisis.
