How Nuclear Power Makes Electricity: How is electricity produced by steam? Know the workings of a nuclear power plant

  • The heat generated from nuclear fission in the reactor heats the water to form high pressure steam.
  • The high pressure steam rotates the steam turbine and generates electricity with the help of the turbine generator.
  • The steam in the turbine is converted back into water and sent to the steam generator, so the process runs continuously.

A large amount of electricity is produced in our country using nuclear energy. Using nuclear energy to convert water into steam and use that steam to generate electricity is a very interesting and sophisticated scientific process. As heat is generated using coal or gas, heat is obtained here by fission of atoms. And with its help further electricity is generated.

Step by step process of power generation

1. Heat generation by nuclear fission

In a nuclear reactor, neutrons are struck at atoms of a radioactive element such as uranium or plutonium. This splits the atom and generates a huge amount of heat energy.

2. Conversion of water into steam under high pressure

A coolant – usually water – is used to absorb this enormous heat generated in the reactor. This superheated water is sent to a 'steam generator'. There water is converted into hot high pressure steam at high pressure.

3. Turning a turbine with steam

This very high pressure steam is rapidly discharged through large tubes to a steam turbine. Due to the high velocity of the steam, the turbine fans start rotating rapidly. Thus heat energy is converted into kinetic energy.

4. Generation of electricity by generators

The shaft of the turbine is directly connected to the electric generator. As the turbine rotates, electricity is generated based on the principle of electromagnetic induction in the generator. The generated electricity is sent to the grid through a transformer.

5. Steam recycling

The steam coming out of the turbine is fed into the 'condenser'. The cooling water from the cooling tower converts this steam back into water and this water is sent to the steam generator to make steam again. This is how recycling is done.

Energy conversion steps

Since this complete process is carried out in a loop i.e. closed cycle, no smoke or carbon emissions are produced, making nuclear energy an important source of clean energy.
