One of the standout success stories of Manchester United’s 25/26 season has been Senne Lammens.
Not many supporters were familiar with the Belgian when INEOS chose to pay an initial £18 million to bring him in from Royal Antwerp.
After Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir struggled between the posts, the Red Devils were in desperate need of stability.
The 24-year-old delivered exactly that and enjoyed a superb debut campaign, earning his place in Belgium’s World Cup squad.
Thibaut Courtois started every match for Belgium but picked up an injury during the quarter-final against Spain.
That handed the United No.1 his long-awaited opportunity to make an impression, but it became a nightmare outing for the former Club Brugge youth product.
He spilled a long-range effort from Pau Cubarsí, allowing Mikel Merino to stab home the winner in the 88th minute.
Belgium supporters were left devastated, while the country’s media also went after the United goalkeeper following their side’s exit from the four-year showpiece.
The 20-time English league champions were prepared to support Senne Lammens, with several former stars at the club having previously faced abuse from fans after World Cup mistakes.
However, The Sun has reported that people inside United have been amazed by how calm and composed the Belgian international has remained since returning to club action.
“MANCHESTER UNITED believe Senne Lammens has become even better since his World Cup howler.
“United insiders have been struck by how unflappable Lammens has remained upon his return to club duty.
“A senior club source said Lammens, who received the number one shirt after the departure of Altay Bayindir on loan, has been ‘excellent’.”
In fact, United believe their goalkeeper has improved since that error, and supporters have already seen signs of it in the opening two Premier League matches.
Despite the defeat against Hull City, the goalkeeper was outstanding, and he also produced a couple of excellent saves to help his side against Ipswich Town.
