Dark comedies thrive on chaotic premises, mistaken identities, and high stakes. On paper, the new cinematic outing Who is Jeevan Ya Bheema? seemed destined to tick all those boxes, boasting an intriguing plot centered around a debt-ridden man trying to cash in a massive ₹2 crore insurance policy by faking his own death alongside a lookalike. Unfortunately, as film critic Smita Srivastava notes, what looked brilliant on paper completely loses its luster on the big screen, proving that the makers insured the insurance plot but completely forgot to insure the entertainment.
A Tangled Web of Lookalikes, Diamonds, and Forced Comedy
Set in Pune, the narrative kicks off with the apparent death of Jeevan, played effortlessly by Arshad Warsi, only for it to be revealed that the deceased is actually his lookalike, Bhima. Eager to secure a lucrative ₹2 crore insurance claim, Jeevan’s nurse wife Yojna (Sanjeeda Sheikh) ropes in an insurance agent, while their glamorous landlady Yashika (Pooja Chopra) harbors her own affections.
The chaos intensifies when ruthless gangsters Vinayak (Vijay Raaz) and Mannu (Brijendra Kala) break into the house searching for hidden diamonds, mistaking Jeevan for Bhima. As police officers and insurance agents pile into the same residence, the screenplay descends into a whirlwind of confusion. However, directed by Abhishek Dogra from Vivek Verma’s story, the film struggles to channel this potential into genuine suspense or humor, with the comedy often feeling forced, disjointed, and occasionally verging on the vulgar.
Seasoned Cast Struggles Against Weak Writing and Direction
Despite assembling a powerhouse ensemble of talented actors renowned for their comic timing, the weak script leaves the performers stranded. Arshad Warsi brings a composed and effortless charm to his dual dynamic, while Vijay Raaz manages to extract a few laughs through his deadpan gangster antics. Sanjeeda Sheikh delivers a sincere attempt as the scheming wife, but her character lacks sufficient depth for audiences to connect with. Meanwhile, Brijendra Kala and Pooja Chopra find themselves hampered by thinly written, unimpactful roles. Ultimately, Who is Jeevan Ya Bheema? serves as a textbook example of how a high-concept premise can collapse under the weight of lackluster direction and sluggish execution.
