Following a high-profile disagreement with its previous publisher, HarperCollins India has announced that it will publish and release the deeply personal political memoir across India on November 10, 2026, coinciding with its global rollout by Alfred A. Knopf in the United States.

Billed as one of the most eagerly awaited political memoirs of contemporary times, Belonging explores the dramatic and introspective journey of Sonia Gandhi, tracking her life from her European roots to entering the heart of Indian politics. The publisher describes the work as a rare, insider perspective on India’s modern political evolution, woven together through intimate themes of love, personal identity, public duty, and national belonging. While the American imprint of Penguin had originally slated the global release for November, the book’s domestic path faced unexpected roadblocks.

Why Penguin Random House India Stepped Back

The transition to HarperCollins came after Penguin Random House India declined to handle the domestic publication. Reports and official statements indicated that while Penguin was initially eager to bring out the memoir, editorial complications arose regarding fact-verification protocols. The publisher sought to edit or alter certain portions of the manuscript, a condition that Sonia Gandhi reportedly flatly refused to accept. Consequently, Penguin India opted out of the Indian publication rights, paving the way for HarperCollins India to step in and secure the rights for the November 10 release.
