The United Nations General Assembly voted on Friday to adopt a new world map that shows the African continent larger. While North America and Europe have been shortchanged, causing resentment in Washington. Know the whole thing.

What was said in the proposal?

This proposal, which was brought with the aim of showing the continents more accurately on the map, got the support of 164 countries. At the same time, America voted against it, while six countries abstained from voting. Let us tell you that the proposal says that the new map, which is called 'Equal Earth Cartographic Projection', helps in showing the world on the map more accurately.

In this proposal, member countries have been appealed to use the new map instead of the traditional Mercator projection. The Mercator projection was developed for maritime navigation in 1569 by the Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator.

What did the foreign ministers say?

Togo's Foreign Minister Robert Dusay, sponsor of the resolution, said that maps influence education and people's thinking. Therefore, inaccurate portrayals of the world can promote old notions. At the same time, America criticized the proposal and called it harmful for the credibility of the institution. US Representative Yarina Ferencevich said that instead of focusing on real issues, the debate is being done on 16th century maps.
