The New York Knicks are close to commencing their title defense next season, but their front office still has some work to do. Their team still has one roster spot available for taking, and according to SNY’s Ian Begley, they have already narrowed down their choices into two: veteran big man Drew Eubanks and swingman John Konchar.

The cursory fan probably will not have a lot of things to say about those two players. They are most definitely not household names, both being journeymen who have spent the majority of their careers playing off the bench and/or handling garbage time duty.

Still, the fact that those two veterans are the rumored finalists for New York’s last open roster spot is a tad confounding. There are definitely safer bets still available in the open market, and both Eubanks and Konchar are nowhere near secure options at this point in their careers.

New York Knicks would be be better off looking elsewhere

The potential addition of Eubanks is probably intended to give the Knicks another emergency option at center following the departure of Mitchell Robinson. However, both Andre Drummond and Mohamed Diawara have more robust offerings. Eubanks is a mobile big man, but his lack of a reliable offensive game and him being undersized do not do him any favors.

Ditto for Konchar. While he is known for being someone who is willing to sacrifice his body to play hard-nosed defense and secure loose balls, he does not add anything that the Knicks do not already have, even off the bench. He is a below-league average three-point shooter for his career, which is basically a death knell for this New York squad.

While going after either of those players will not really have a drastic impact on how the Knicks operate next season, the front office would be better off having other options under consideration.
