Western Railway has recovered a fine of Rs 100.42 crore between April to August 2026 through extensive ticket checking campaigns conducted across its network to curb ticketless and irregular travel. During this period, Railways caught 13.47 lakh ticketless and irregular passengers. These also include cases to unbooked luggage.
In August 2026, the action of Western Railways became more intense. More than 2.13 lakh ticketless and irregular travelers were caught this month alone. Railways collected a fine of Rs 17.16 crore from these cases.
A large number of irregular journeys were detected during the ticket checking drive in Mumbai suburban rail network also. Between April and August 2026, 4.65 lakh cases of ticketless or irregular travel were reported. Western Railway recovered Rs 25.65 crore from these.
According to Western Railway, this continuous action being taken in Mumbai's suburban network is an important step towards ensuring travel with authorized tickets and strengthening travel discipline.
Western Railways has also increased special vigil on those making unauthorized journeys through general tickets in AC suburban local trains. Around 78,600 penalty cases were registered in AC local services during April to August 2026. Rs 3.26 crore was recovered from these.
Last year, during the same period, Rs 1.20 crore was recovered from around 36,480 cases. On this basis, a significant increase of about 172 percent was recorded in the collection of fines in AC suburban services.
Appreciating the efforts of the ticket checking staff, Western Railway said that the objective of these campaigns is not only to protect the railway revenue but also to strengthen the habit among the passengers of taking tickets and traveling in the authorized manner.
According to the Railways, the ongoing ticket checking campaigns are helping in curbing unauthorized travel, reducing revenue leakage and increasing transparency in the ticketing system. It is also contributing to ensuring a more streamlined and better travel experience for passengers on the Western Railway network.
