Health Minister Dr. Shardwat Mukherjee said that dengue can be completely prevented, but awareness is necessary for this. Appealing to teachers, headmasters and headmistresses, he said that children should be allowed to wear full sleeve clothes for the next three months, irrespective of the existing school uniform.

He said that he is continuously sending messages to the schools and with folded hands they are appealing that this temporary change should be made in the clothes of children during September, October and November.

‘Don’t send girls to school wearing skirts’

The Health Minister especially said for girl students that they should not be sent to school wearing skirts. He appealed to the schools to allow girls to wear such salwar suits which completely cover their legs. According to the minister, reducing the exposed parts of the body can help in reducing the risk of mosquito bites.

Told knee-length socks are not enough

During the meeting, it was also suggested that children should wear knee-length socks to protect them from mosquitoes. However, the Health Minister did not consider this as an adequate safety measure. He said that knee-length socks stick to the skin and are very thin. In such a situation, mosquitoes can bite through them also. Therefore, he insisted on making children wear clothes that completely cover their hands and legs.

The Health Minister has asked schools to allow boys to wear full length trousers and full sleeve shirts. At the same time, an appeal has been made to allow girl students whose uniform includes skirts to wear salwar suits. He says that the purpose of these measures is to reduce the exposed skin of children during the peak dengue season.

New guidelines will be issued for government schools

The state government is expected to issue an administrative circular regarding these temporary uniform changes for government schools. At the same time, private schools will also be requested to take similar precautionary measures. However, the final decision on making changes in uniform in private schools will be taken by the concerned school administration only.

Special caution from September to November

The minister said that efforts should be made to reduce dengue cases in the next three months i.e. September, October and November. This appeal has been made at a time when West Bengal sees a repeated increase in cases of mosquito-borne diseases during and after the monsoon. During this time, the Health Department is especially being cautious about school going children, because children can stay in school for many hours and outside in such places where there is a possibility of coming in contact with mosquitoes.

The main objective of the government’s proposed uniform guideline is to reduce the exposed skin of children during the peak dengue season. Along with this, other efforts to awareness against dengue and prevention of mosquitoes will also continue in the state.

Appealing for cooperation from schools, the Health Minister said that if children are made to wear more covering clothes in these three months and awareness is increased, then efforts can be made to reduce the cases of dengue.
