Srinagar: The terrorist killed during an encounter in Budgam district of Jammu and Kashmir on Friday has been identified as Yasir. Jammu and Kashmir Police said on Saturday that Yasir was a Pakistani citizen associated with Lashkar-e-Taiba.
Police shared information about his identity through a post on social media. The post said, “You can run but you can't hide!” According to the police, the terrorist killed during 'Operation Ashdaar' has been identified as Yasir, a Pakistani national of Lashkar-e-Taiba.
The campaign started after intelligence information
According to security forces, this operation was jointly conducted by the Indian Army, Jammu and Kashmir Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF). The operation was launched on Thursday evening based on specific intelligence received regarding the presence of terrorists in the area.
The Army had named this operation conducted in Budgam as 'Operation Ashdaar'.
The Army's Srinagar-based Chinar Corps had said on Friday that during the search operation, the soldiers noticed some suspicious activities. When an attempt was made to stop the suspects, the terrorists started firing. After this the encounter started between the two sides.
Operation conducted at a height of 15 thousand feet
According to the army, one terrorist was killed in the encounter. AK-series rifles and other war material were recovered from the spot.
The operation was conducted in a densely forested area at an altitude of about 15,000 feet near the Budgam-Poonch border. The security forces faced challenging conditions during the operation due to rugged terrain and difficult geographical conditions.
This area falls in the Pir Panjal range, which connects the Kashmir valley with the Poonch-Rajouri region.
Senior army officer praised the action
Hours after the encounter, Lieutenant General Prateek Sharma of the Army's Northern Command praised the swift and precise action of the Srinagar-based Chinar Corps in killing the terrorist in Ashdar Gali area of Budgam.
Increased security in high altitude areas
Security forces have increased their presence in the high altitude areas of Jammu and Kashmir. Surveillance has been strengthened especially in areas with forests and inaccessible roads, where there is a possibility of terrorists hiding.
As part of the strategy to maintain continuous security presence, Temporary Operating Bases (TOBs) have been established at several locations in the high altitude areas. Jammu and Kashmir Police Chief Nalin Prabhat had last month taken stock of the functioning of these TOBs and the security arrangements of the area.
