Five undertrial prisoners allegedly attacked the warden at Parappan Agrahara Central Jail in Bengaluru, Karnataka. It is alleged that the prisoners dragged the warden to a room and tried to strangle him. Other jail employees arrived in time and saved the warden.

Police gave information about this matter on Saturday. The incident is said to have taken place on September 2. A case has been registered against the five prisoners under attempt to murder, assault and other sections.

According to the police, these five prisoners are in jail in the murder case of former Bajrang Dal worker Suhas Shetty. Warden Manjunath Haveli was allegedly attacked on September 2 following an earlier dispute over prison rules.

According to the police, on September 2 at 10:05 am, Warden Manjunath Haveli had gone to 'Block-1' of the jail to get information about a prisoner for a scheduled online meeting. Meanwhile, accused Mohammad Mushamir allegedly abused the warden and threatened to kill him.

After this Mushamir allegedly attacked the warden's face. Then four other undertrial prisoners Abdul Shafgan, Mohammad Rizwan, Niaz and Qalandar Shafi also reached there. It is alleged that all four dragged the warden to a room and tried to strangle him.

Other jail employees arrived on time and saved the warden. Police said that a case has been registered against the five accused under attempt to murder, assault and other sections. Initial police investigation revealed that Mushamir was sent to 'Block-1' from the security section.

He was angry with the warden for being prevented from taking extra luggage inside the jail. Police say that for this reason he had a grudge against the warden. Police said that after getting permission from the court, the five accused will be interrogated.

Karnataka Home Minister Priyank Kharge spoke to journalists regarding this incident in Kalaburagi. He said that he will seek complete information about the matter and after that appropriate action will be taken. The minister said that he has not yet received complete information about the incident. He will find out why the attack happened and what actually happened.

Priyank Kharge said that some prisoners may have mental and behavioral problems. The jail department provides counseling to the prisoners from time to time. Steps are also taken to prevent violent behavior.

The minister said that Additional Director General of Police R. A high level committee headed by Hitendra has given a report regarding jail reforms. This includes issues like increasing surveillance in jails, grading prisoners based on their mental condition and keeping them in jail according to their condition.

Priyank Kharge also mentioned drug addiction among some prisoners. He said, 'In many cases, when drugs are not available, prisoners start behaving differently. It is not always violent but some prisoners may harm themselves. The minister said that the reason behind the attack on the warden will also be investigated.

He said that there are more prisoners in the state jails than their capacity. Especially in Parappan Agrahara Jail there are about 4,500 prisoners. The committee formed on prison reforms has also visited other prisons including Telangana, Tamil Nadu and Tihar. Priyank Kharge said he himself plans to visit one or two reform homes next month before taking a final decision on the recommendations.
