Manchester United got their Premier League campaign up and running in emphatic fashion last week, thrashing Ipswich Town 5-2 at Old Trafford.

It was another disappointing opening from the Red Devils, who fell behind early in the contest, and once again Bruno Fernandes had to take responsibility for dragging his side back into the game.

The Portugal international did far more than just steady things, scoring a hat-trick and also providing one assist as the 20-time English league champions swept the Tractor Boys aside after the break.

It was another reminder that the three-time Champions League winners simply cannot do without their club captain.

The 31-year-old’s current contract runs out next summer, and there has been talk that United are willing to break their wage structure in order to tie him down to a new long-term agreement.

Representatives of both sides are in talks, but as a safeguard to buy more time, Football Insider has reported that United are preparing to trigger the one-year extension option in the former Sporting CP star’s contract.

“Manchester United are planning to trigger the one-year extension in Bruno Fernandes’ contract in the coming months, sources have told Football Insider.

“There remains an air of uncertainty around Fernandes’ future at Old Trafford as he moves closer to the end of his current deal.

“They are expected to hold discussions with his representatives over a new longer-term contract, but for now they still have that option available to rely on.”

There has been interest in the PFA Player of the Year winner from Saudi Arabia and Turkiye, but United are in no position to lose their talisman.

To prevent Bruno Fernandes from entering discussions with an overseas club over a pre-contract agreement, it is vital that United activate that option soon.

Another player for whom United are considering the same approach is Lisandro Martinez, with the Argentine defender’s contract also due to expire next year.
