Total passenger vehicle registrations in India increased by 16 percent year-on-year to 3,96,269 units in August 2026. However, compared to the month of July, there has been a decline of 5.8 percent. In the Indian car market, Maruti Suzuki has maintained its dominance with a market share of 41.8 percent.

Maruti Suzuki registered 1,65,830 cars in the month of August and the company registered a robust growth of 22.8 percent year-on-year. Maruti's performance is 1 lakh units more than second placed Tata Motors. Tata Motors consolidated its second position in the market with sales of 56,565 units, registering a huge jump of 40.6 percent year-on-year. Tata Motors' total market share has reached 14.3 percent.

On the other hand, Mahindra Company remained at the third position with 50,519 units. Although Mahindra's annual growth remained at 4.3 percent, registrations fell by 14.2 percent compared to July. It was followed by Hyundai at the fourth position with 46,988 units, which showed a growth of 4.8 percent year-on-year.

Toyota (25,012 units) and Kia (23,372 units) are fifth and sixth respectively. Toyota's sales fell 10 percent, while Kia posted a 17.6 percent year-on-year increase. Skoda and Volkswagen jointly sold 7,458 units, a decline of 17.5 percent. MG Company remained eighth with 5,784 units.

In the month of August, some companies reported unexpected and excellent growth. Honda posted a year-on-year growth of 12.4 percent with 4,968 units, while Renault posted a year-on-year growth of 25.1 percent with 3,275 units. Among all established brands, Nissan posted the highest year-on-year growth of 83.6 percent at 2,758 units.

New electric car company Winfast registered 2,199 units, showing a sharp improvement of 43.5 percent compared to July. Citroen registered a growth of 76.9 percent with 812 units. At the bottom of the list were BYD (543 units) and Jeep (186 units), which saw a year-on-year decline in sales. Looking at the auto sector as a whole, August saw a year-on-year growth but a slight slowdown on a monthly basis.
