French winger makes first appearance from the bench in a comfortable win

Andoni Iraola shared his assessment of Bradley Barcola’s Liverpool debut after the Reds secured a 2-0 victory over Ipswich Town.

The Merseyside club brushed aside the Premier League newcomers with ease at Portman Road to register their first win under their new manager, after he had begun his Premier League tenure with two 2-2 draws.

There was major attention on Barcola, the £123 million arrival from Paris Saint-Germain on Friday evening, and the winger was included among the substitutes with the intention of handing him his debut later in the game.

He came on for fellow new signing Victor Munoz in the 64th minute and was greeted with a loud ovation from the travelling fans. He played on the left wing, while Cody Gakpo, who remained at the club despite strong interest from Manchester City and Tottenham, moved across to the right.

Barcola was not heavily involved during his outing in East Anglia, but he appeared neat in possession during his short cameo.

“I think he had good minutes,” Iraola told Sky Sports afterwards. “I think he has a very good pass.

“In a counter, a couple of times we didn't find him, so we will have to learn these kinds of movements because he will be in behind, threatening all the time.

“He hasn't played any competitive minutes since the World Cup, so we have to be a little bit more careful, but I think he has been very good.”

The 24-year-old may now be in line for his first start for his new club in midweek, when the Reds begin their Champions League campaign against Atletico Madrid at Anfield on Wednesday.
