Schalke turned in a determined performance to force Rekordmeister FC Bayern to a 0-0 draw in the Matchday 2 Topspiel of the Bundesliga. In doing so, they finally brought an end to a 12-game losing streak against the Bavarians.
Schalke kept the Rekordmeister under control in a tactical first half. With Michael Olise and Harry Kane beginning on the bench, the clearest opening before the interval fell to Luis Díaz, who could not finish after Nathaniel Brown’s excellent pass sent him through one-on-one with Loris Karius.
Brown, operating in the advanced position assigned to him by Vincent Kompany, also tested goal with a decent effort that was pushed away by the 33-year-old goalkeeper. Schalke were naturally cautious in their approach, although Manuel Neuer was also called into action to deal with Adil Aouchiche’s harmless free-kick.
Kompany opted to introduce Harry Kane for the second half, but it was the double substitution before the hour mark that altered the flow of the contest. Jamal Musiala made his first competitive appearance of the season, while Michael Olise also made an immediate impact after coming onto the pitch.
Bayern’s attack suddenly found rhythm and created several promising situations in the final third, but the home side stood firm in the first Bundesliga match at Veltins Arena since 2023. Miron Muslić’s team remained faithful to the compact defensive organisation that earned them promotion to the Bundesliga.
There was still an opportunity for Kane to break the deadlock, but Karius produced the finest save of the game. Schalke are still waiting for their first goal, but they somehow managed to stop Kompany’s attacking machine by restricting them to fewer chances.
Schalke will next play in the opening fixture of Matchday 3 away to Union Berlin. FC Bayern, meanwhile, will travel to take on Elversberg, who have started with two dramatic wins, three days after opening their Champions League campaign at Allianz Arena against Bodø/Glimt.
