Real Madrid have moved immediately against academy product Raul Asencio after the defender was caught drink-driving during a trip to Gran Canaria. The youngster, once seen as having a bright future at the Bernabeu, is now set to face strict internal disciplinary action in addition to his legal conviction.

Disciplinary action at the Bernabeu

Real Madrid have formally opened an extraordinary disciplinary case against Asencio following his recent legal problems linked to a drink-driving incident. The defender was stopped at a breathalyser checkpoint at 6:30 AM on August 16 in the south of Gran Canaria while driving under the influence of alcohol, forcing the club's hierarchy to react urgently.

According to journalist Melchor Ruiz, Real Madrid have already initiated disciplinary proceedings against the player, making it clear that his behaviour will not be ignored by the leadership at Valdebebas.

The matter became public on Wednesday, leading the club to respond quickly in order to protect its public image and maintain internal standards. The player returned positive results in both the first and second breath tests, with reports indicating that his reading was well above the permitted limit. He was then called to a fast-track trial, where he received a fine of €14,400, calculated at €120 per day for four months, along with an eight-month suspension of his driving licence.

Heavy fines and possible suspensions ahead

The possible punishments Asencio could receive are set out in the collective agreement between La Liga and the AFE (Association of Spanish Footballers). Under those rules, the defender's conduct could be treated as either a serious or a very serious offence, with both categories carrying major penalties.

If the club judges the incident to be a serious offence, Asencio could lose his salary for between two and ten days. If Real Madrid classify the matter as a very serious breach of contract, the punishment would rise sharply to match the seriousness of the case. In that situation, the suspension could run from eleven to thirty days, while fines could go up to 25% of the first €100,000 of his monthly salary.

A fall in status for the academy graduate

Asencio was once viewed as the leading figure of the Real Madrid academy when he broke into the first team, but his progress has slowed dramatically in recent months. The defender has suffered a major drop in form on the pitch and is currently not even the fourth-choice option at centre-back.

This latest controversy only adds to the isolation of a player who was already in the club's bad books after refusing to leave in the summer transfer window, a decision that reportedly prevented the club from moving for new signings.

Asencio's off-field problems worsen

The timing of this incident is especially harmful for the Spaniard, as it strengthens the view that he has shown a lack of professionalism at a crucial stage of his career. Apart from the drink-driving charge, the player is also dealing with other legal issues that have been hanging over his future for some time.

Reports have pointed out that he is still facing two years in prison in a separate case involving breach of privacy and the alleged distribution of a private video involving a minor. The build-up of these off-field issues has left his position at the club completely uncertain.
