Manchester United did not solve their shortage of cover at left-back, despite Michael Carrick making his wishes clear on the matter.

There remains belief within the squad in Luke Shaw, but the England international’s injury troubles and recent form have created major concerns before a campaign in which the club will be fighting on four fronts.

The one positive from deadline day was that Harry Amass stayed put, even though several EFL clubs were interested in taking him.

The 19-year-old has made seven appearances for the United first team, but at present the Red Devils intend for him to continue with the Under-21s.

That appears to be the wrong decision, both for the development of the 'amazing' young full-back and for INEOS.

If the co-owners eventually decide to sell the Carrington academy graduate, his limited first-team exposure means he would probably command only a very small fee.

The United head coach has said he has alternatives in Patrick Dorgu, Noussair Mazraoui and Diogo Dalot, which suggests Harry Amass is not currently a central part of his plans.

That view has been reinforced by the Manchester Evening News, which reported that some figures at United still do not believe he is ready to make the jump, and there is doubt over whether he will receive many minutes under Carrick.

"There was deadline day loan interest in the 19-year-old left-back as well, but not a deal that United felt would necessarily suit.

"They were conscious of the issues in that position, although there is still scepticism as to whether Amass will feature much for the first team this season.

"Despite an encouraging pre-season, Amass hasn’t made a matchday squad in the Premier League this season and still has to convince some people he has a long-term future at the club."

The England Under-19 international was seen training with the first team ahead of the Everton match, and it is now up to the left-back to impress Carrick and alter his thinking going forward.
