Nothing proves more exasperating than opening a kitchen cupboard only to find it sticky and marked. Few people appreciate they can become amongst the filthiest spots in a household. While it’s fairly routine to clean kitchen work surfaces daily, cooking generates minuscule oil particles that can actually become suspended in the air as steam transports them to elevated surfaces.
This means kitchen cupboards can rapidly become a trap for grease, food debris, and the bacteria that thrive on these marks. If cupboards are not cleaned regularly, not only will a kitchen be unsanitary, but the accumulation of dirt will become increasingly difficult to shift and ultimately damage the surface. However, Tommy from My Beautiful Kitchen has revealed an unconventional yet highly successful method to deep-clean kitchen cupboards is to employ vegetable oil to combat those persistent grease marks.
Tommy stated: “Vegetable oil is a great option to help you remove old grease and grime that has built up on your kitchen cabinets.
“For even better cleaning results, use the oil with two parts baking soda and a splash of lemon juice for that extra sparkle. Use a delicate, wet cloth to apply the solution.”
How can vegetable oil clean a kitchen cupboard?
It may seem peculiar to apply oil to a greasy surface, but kitchen cupboards are typically challenging to clean because aged grease hardens into fat, creating a sticky buildiup.
Vegetable oil blends with existing grease due to their comparable chemical compositions, effectively diluting the hardened fat until it becomes considerably softer.
Utilising vegetable oil simplifies grease removal by breaking down the stain, making it straightforward to wipe down your kitchen cupboards swiftly with minimal effort.
What other ingredients can help clean a kitchen cabinet?
Other substances such as bicarbonate of soda can also be employed to cleanse kitchen cupboards. Bicarb is alkaline, which assists in loosening grease, while lemon juice, being acidic, is capable of breaking down stubborn stains.
It should be noted, however, that bicarbonate of soda and lemon juice may cause damage to certain finishes, so it is strongly advisable to conduct a spot test prior to using them for cleaning purposes.
Vegetable oil is typically safe to use on the majority of materials, which is precisely why it proves such a valuable ingredient as a natural cleaning agent.
How to deep clean kitchen cabinets with vegetable oil
- To start, pour a modest amount of vegetable oil into a bowl. Vegetable oil can be used on its own, though you may also create a cleaning paste combining one part vegetable oil, two parts bicarbonate of soda and a dash of lemon juice.
- Apply a small quantity of the oil or paste onto a damp cloth, then carefully rub it onto a kitchen cabinet.
- Allow the solution to rest on the cabinet for a minute or two, though it can be left for 10 minutes should the grease prove particularly resistant.
- When the time is up, take a clean, damp cloth and wipe the cabinet from top to bottom; any grease should lift away with ease.
Follow this up by wiping the cabinet with a dry cloth, and your cupboards should now be spotlessly clean and gleaming in just a matter of minutes, simply by making use of what you already have to hand in your kitchen.
