A beautiful UK destination is a total hidden gem, with nobody searching for it on Google. Car rental experts SIXT identified the top hidden spots in every county, ranking them using factors including accessibility, weather, pollution and visitor reviews.
By analysing search volumes and social media coverage, the research also revealed the UK’s 10 most gatekept destinations, with some receiving no average monthly Google searches and others barely being discovered online.
Of the 108 hidden gems featured in SIXT’s ‘hidden near home’ ranking, nine have no average monthly searches. This makes them a perfect choice for travellers seeking a trip filled with breathtaking views, without the crowds that often accompany more popular British tourist spots.
Yesnaby Sea Stacks, in Orkney, Scotland, has been revealed as the best hidden gem that no one is searching for, ranking 8th overall in SIXT’s ‘Hidden Near Home’ index.
Despite its postcard-perfect coastal scenery and towering sea stacks, it has no average monthly Google searches, suggesting it remains largely undiscovered by those not already in the know.
For those looking to escape the crowds, Yesnaby Sea Stacks offers rugged coastal walks, towering sandstone cliffs and stunning views across the Atlantic Ocean, making it a must-visit destination for anyone looking to discover some of Britain’s most hidden natural wonders.
During a westerly gale, you can expect huge waves crashing into the cliffs, but in calmer weather it’s a nature-lovers paradise, with wild flowers – including Primula scotica – and plenty of seabirds to spot.
The stack was made famous by Joe Brown and his friends, who made the first ascent in 1967. Subsequently, this stack and the Old Man of Hoy are the only two stacks in Orkney that regularly receive assaults by visiting climbers.
Nearby is the Broch of Borwick, an ancient structure more than 2,000 years old with views towards Marwick Head and the Brough of Birsay, home to a Pictish settlement.
Also included on the list are Lud’s Church Chasm in Staffordshire, Trottick Mill Ponds in Dundee, Luttle Orme and Angel Bay in Conwy, and Braan Gorge in Perth and Kinross.
