Despite going ahead twice against Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium, Manchester United were ultimately forced to settle for a share of the points with the home side.

Michael Carrick’s side have now lost one, won one and drawn one of their opening three Premier League matches.

In the end, the efforts of Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko were not enough to ensure the Red Devils returned to Manchester with all three points.

United were protecting a 2-1 advantage from the 88th minute, when Benjamin Sesko nodded in from an excellent Luke Shaw delivery, right up until the sixth minute of stoppage time.

That was when untidy play inside the penalty area saw Ainsley Maitland-Niles pounce on a loose ball outside the box before drilling a long-range effort beyond Senne Lammens.

Tyrique George had earlier equalised for the Toffees, and although it was a superb finish from him, there will be questions over Senne Lammens after he was beaten at his near post.

After the match, George offered a damning verdict on United’s approach, telling Sky Sports that Everton still believed they could take something from the game even while behind.

“We knew that we could get back into the game,” said the former Chelsea prospect. “That’s what we did. [A] really strong performance.”

It is fair to say Carrick will be furious that his side failed to see the win through in the closing moments of the contest.

Next up for United is their Champions League opener at home to Sabah on Thursday, September 10.

After that comes the first Manchester derby of the 2026/2027 campaign, with Enzo Maresca’s Manchester City making the short trip to Old Trafford a week from today.
