Cricket Australia has announced its squad for the series, with Marnus Labuschagne retaining his place despite a prolonged run of poor form.

Labuschagne's position in the Test team had come under serious scrutiny after his struggles with the bat. However, the selectors have decided to back the experienced batter for the upcoming South Africa tour.

Marnus Labuschagne survives Test squad axe

Labuschagne has endured a difficult period in Test cricket. His latest struggles were evident during Australia's Test series against Bangladesh, where he managed scores of just 1, 31 and 4 across three innings. The numbers become even more concerning when his recent record is considered.

Labuschagne has scored only one fifty in his last 20 Test innings. His career Test batting average, which once stood above 55, has now fallen to around 44.

Despite those numbers, Australia have continued to show faith in the right-handed batter. The South Africa series could therefore be an important opportunity for Labuschagne to rediscover his best form and secure his long-term place in the Test side.

Jack Weatherald misses out again

While Labuschagne has retained his spot, Jack Weatherald has failed to make Australia's Test squad. Weatherald's position has also been under pressure after a difficult start to his international career.

After six Tests, the opener has a batting average of only around 20. Matt Renshaw opened the batting in his place during the second Test against Bangladesh, and Renshaw has now been included in the squad for the South Africa tour.

Cooper Connolly gets another opportunity

All-rounder Cooper Connolly has also been included in Australia's squad. Connolly made his Test debut against Sri Lanka last year but has played only one Test so far.

His inclusion gives Australia another all-round option heading into a challenging overseas assignment.

Left-arm spinner Matthew Kuhnemann has also been selected. Kuhnemann has taken 25 wickets in five Test matches, giving Australia an additional spin option for conditions that could vary across the South African venues.

Australia return to South Africa after Sandpaper Gate

The Test series will mark Australia's first Test tour of South Africa since the infamous 2018 Sandpaper Gate scandal. The previous tour remains one of the most controversial episodes in Australian cricket history.

During the 2018 series, Steve Smith was captain, while David Warner was vice-captain and Cameron Bancroft was also involved in the ball-tampering scandal.

Smith and Warner were subsequently banned, while Bancroft also received a suspension. Smith famously broke down in tears during an emotional press conference after returning to Australia.

Several members of the current Australian squad were also part of that controversial tour. Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood and Matt Renshaw are all set to return to South Africa.
