In a remarkable display of diaspora leadership and technological innovation, Indian-American tech entrepreneur Sandeep Nailwal has launched a pioneering stablecoin-based donation campaign to support communities devastated by recent severe floods and landslides in Nepal. Leveraging blockchain technology to bypass traditional banking delays, the initiative allows donors worldwide to contribute securely and instantly in digital currency, ensuring rapid financial assistance reaches those in urgent need.

Harnessing Blockchain and Stablecoins for Rapid Disaster Relief

Through the newly established platform ‘NepalRelief.org’, the campaign aims to streamline humanitarian aid distribution. Nailwal, the co-founder of Polygon Labs, highlighted that stablecoins—cryptocurrencies pegged to stable assets like the US dollar to minimize market volatility—offer an ideal mechanism for emergency funding. As of Sunday morning, the initiative has successfully raised approximately $173,202 (over 26.2 million Nepalese rupees). The collected digital funds are systematically converted into local currency and channeled directly into the official ‘Prime Minister’s Disaster Relief Fund’ of the Government of Nepal.

Collaborative Global and Local Support Network

The humanitarian effort has garnered backing from key technological and financial institutions, including Polygon Labs’ Open Money Stack, Quantity, and the US-based Cross River Bank, which officially urged global contributors to support the cause. Furthermore, local coordination has been instrumental; Nepalese tech entrepreneur Bal Krishna Joshi collaborated with organizers to bridge communication channels with the Nepalese government, ensuring seamless integration of blockchain-raised funds with official state relief operations. Hailing from neighboring Uttarakhand, Nailwal also reflected on historical ties, echoing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s sentiment that the people of Nepal are India’s brothers and sisters during times of crisis.
