Leeds United have now brought an end to their academy transfer pursuit, with 16-year-old winger Silva Mexes making the move across the Pennines after departing Manchester United. Mexes joined Manchester United from Ipswich Town in 2024 at the age of 14, but he did not register a competitive senior appearance or an official Under-18 league outing during the 2025/26 season, spending much of that campaign with the Under-16 side. His transfer gives him a fresh environment at Thorp Arch, where the academy has built a strong reputation. Leeds’ 2026/27 squad list now includes Tyler-Earnshaw, confirming his place at the club.

There is a clear reason why this deal appears logical from Leeds United’s perspective. Mexes possesses the athletic attributes to trouble academy defenders, with a personal best of 11.1 seconds in the 100 metres and an eagerness to drive forward from the left flank. That pace gives him a major weapon, although speed on its own will not be enough to earn him minutes under Daniel Farke.

Farke demands more from his wide players than just eye-catching moments. They are expected to track runners, maintain their shape, link play neatly and understand when to attack space instead of forcing individual duels. Mexes has the direct style often associated with a player like Daniel James, but the tactical side of his game will need time to develop as he moves into the Under-18 and Under-21 levels.

This is why the recruitment appears sensible. Leeds United have consistently shown academy players that strong displays can open the door to senior involvement, and recent appearances on the bench for young prospects have only strengthened that message. According to the report, Mexes’ move came after scholarship talks at Old Trafford collapsed over his first-team pathway, allowing Leeds to offer something Manchester United could not: a clearer route for progression.

His father, former Premier League striker Robert Earnshaw, gives him access to valuable football knowledge, but the teenager still has a significant physical and tactical step to make. He already has experience with Thailand Under-17s, including scoring against Uzbekistan, though senior football remains some distance away.

For Leeds United, this is not a short-term answer for Farke’s 2026/27 squad. It is a deliberate academy investment, with the club choosing to support potential before proven output. Expecting a 16-year-old to break into a Premier League squad straightaway would be unrealistic. Leeds United have effectively given themselves time to find out what Mexes can develop into, and at this stage, that is exactly what he requires.
