Federico Gatti scored in stoppage time to wipe out Alphadjo Cisse’s opener, as Juventus and Milan had to settle for a share of the points with substitutes making the key impact.

Both teams had opened the season with two wins from two, although neither side had been fully convincing in performance terms. Juventus were without Kenan Yildiz, Khephren Thuram, Weston McKennie, Andrea Cambiaso, Jeff Ekhator, Juan Cabal and deadline-day arrival Pape Matar Sarr, while Nico Gonzalez and Kerim Alajbegovic were handed their first starts of the campaign.

Matteo Gabbia was unavailable for the Rossoneri because of an ankle problem, but Adrien Rabiot and Luka Modric were fit enough to start after being gradually reintroduced following the World Cup, while Diego Moreira made his debut.

Nico Gonzalez tested Mike Maignan with a shot, and Francisco Conceicao did the same, before Manuel Locatelli slid in but could not direct the rebound on target.

Francisco Conceicao then got on the end of a floated pass from Douglas Luiz and once again forced Maignan into a difficult save at the near post.

After the break, a heavy first touch from Randal Kolo Muani meant he could not take full advantage of an intelligent through ball from Conceicao, while Koni De Winter made two vital tackles.

Conceicao was by far Juventus’ most threatening player, and on 55 minutes his effort crashed against the base of the post after Yunus Musah had surrendered possession in midfield.

Mario Gila produced a decisive tackle to prevent Kolo Muani from getting a shot away as he chased another Conceicao through ball, but it was Milan who went in front with their first real opening.

Ruben Amorim’s changes made the difference, as Samuel Chukwueze launched a counter with a cross-field pass, Alphadjo Cisse brought it under perfect control, cut inside Manuel Locatelli and fired a right-footed finish through Pierre Kalulu’s legs into the far bottom corner.

Juventus had some protests over the initial challenge by De Winter on Kolo Muani that started the move, but it was Milan’s first Serie A goal against Juventus since Olivier Giroud scored in May 2023.

Nick Woltemade was introduced for his Bianconeri debut and blazed over on the half-volley after a Teun Koopmeiners free-kick struck the wall and dropped back into his path.

Jeremie Boga sent a snap effort straight at Maignan, but the leveller arrived in stoppage time when Koopmeiners curled in a cross from the left and Federico Gatti rose at the back post to head home. The defender had been expected to leave the Bianconeri this summer, but stayed and delivered when it mattered. Interestingly, Gatti had also scored for Juventus against Amorim’s Sporting.
