The number of devotees who died in a road accident that occurred late Sunday night on the Eastern Peripheral Expressway in Baghpat district of Uttar Pradesh has increased to 12. 24 people are injured, who are undergoing treatment in different hospitals.

Expressing grief over the incident, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has given instructions to provide financial assistance of Rs 2 lakh each to the families of the deceased and Rs 50 thousand each to the injured.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered the district administration to provide better treatment to those injured in road accidents. It also said that the government is with the victims in this hour of grief, all possible help will be provided.

Seeing the seriousness of the matter, Meerut District Divisional Commissioner (Commissioner) Bhanu Chandra Goswami and Meerut’s Additional Director General of Police (ADG) Meerut Bhanu Bhaskar inquired about the well-being of the injured.

District Magistrate of Baghpat district Asmita Lal and Superintendent of Police Suraj Kumar Rai were also present with him. The Divisional Commissioner directed the officials to provide all possible help to the victims.

The District Magistrate reached the hospital and met the injured and inspected the arrangements for their treatment. He instructed the concerned officials that the injured should get better treatment.

Any kind of negligence will not be tolerated in this. SP has ordered investigation into the incident. Police are now trying to find out what other reasons could be behind the accident.

The District Magistrate said that this accident happened when a pickup vehicle filled with devotees returning after visiting Gogamedi Dham in Rajasthan was going towards Badaun via Baghpat.

Late Sunday night around 12:30, as soon as the vehicle reached the expressway near Bada village of Baghpat. It is suspected that the driver had dozed off.

After losing control of the steering, the vehicle mounted the divider and overturned. After the accident, there was an outcry among the devotees.

As soon as information about the incident was received, the police was informed through dial-112. After this, Baghpat police administration came into action and immediately several PRVs and ambulances were sent to the spot.

Relief and rescue operations were started rapidly. District Magistrate Asmita Lal and SP Suraj Kumar Rai themselves reached the spot at night and left no stone unturned in the relief work.

The injured were immediately admitted to three different hospitals in Baghpat, while the seriously injured were referred to the Higher Center in Meerut for better treatment.

Baghpat District Hospital CMS Anurag Vashney said that so far six people have died in the district. These include Sadhu, Ramsingh, Jitendra, Munim, Rameshwar and Sugar Pal.

While the other six people died in Meerut hospital. The deceased include Murthy (35), Bhanwati (52), Premwati (50), Diksha (02), a 45-year-old unidentified woman and a four-year-old child.

Taking cognizance of the incident, ADG Meerut Bhanu Bhaskar reached the hospital and met the injured and inquired about their well being. He instructed the doctors not to be negligent in the treatment of the injured.

He said, “This is a very tragic accident. The police and administration completely stand with the families of the victims and will provide all possible assistance.”

Meerut Divisional Commissioner Bhanu Chandra Goswami directed the officials to speed up the relief work and provide all possible help to the victims.

District Magistrate Baghpat Asmita Lal is leaving no stone unturned in providing best treatment to the suffering patients. She is continuously giving directions to the officials and is also taking information about their well-being from the doctors.

SP said that preliminary investigation has revealed that due to long journey and driving at night, the driver had dozed off due to which this accident occurred.

Whereas District Hospital CMS Anurag Vashney believes that such accidents on the highway often occur due to driver’s fatigue and carelessness.
